why giving back matters to me

World Vision was my very first step into charity work. In my early twenties, I sponsored four children in Thailand, long before I ever imagined I would end up living here. I supported them for many years, right up until they were old enough to stand on their own two feet and the program naturally came to an end.

Knowing I played even a small part in helping shape their future still fills me with gratitude.

Starlight will always have a special place in my heart. I volunteered as a Wish Granter, which meant project-managing a child’s entire wish from start to finish, helping them choose their dream, sourcing vendors and sponsors, negotiating special deals, organising family and friends, and bringing everyone together for the big wish-granting day. I even planned the wish party to make sure the moment felt magical.

I also served as a volunteer spokesperson, representing Starlight at events whenever donors made contributions.

Being able to help create joy for these seriously ill children and their families, especially in the middle of their toughest moments, is something I’ll always treasure.

We began sponsoring children through Compassion Australia during Covid-19, a time when so many families were struggling, and support felt more important than ever. The reason we chose Compassion wasn’t random. One of our dental clients is a strong advocate for the organisation and is deeply involved in their work.

Instead of picking a charity blindly, I wanted to support a cause that someone I trusted was already part of. Through Compassion Australia, we’ve now sponsored eight children from the Philippines, a place that also holds meaning for me because some of our team members are based there.

It feels like giving back to a community that supports us, and honouring a connection that’s close to our hearts.

Animals have always held a big part of my heart, especially dogs and cats who have been abandoned, mistreated, or left to survive on their own.

In addition to adopting two homeless dogs from Phuket, I’ve supported a number of rescue groups over the years, including Iron Dog Rescue, a no-kill Rottweiler shelter in Australia that gives these beautiful giants a second chance at life.

Here in Thailand, I also support volunteers who dedicate their days and resources to caring for street dogs and homeless dogs, feeding them, treating their wounds, paying for vet fees, rescuing them when they’re in danger, and giving them the love they’ve never had. Their kindness inspires me deeply, and I’m grateful to play even a small role in helping these animals feel safe, fed, and loved.
